Week 1 (September 5-8)

September 5: Today we went over the course outline (attached above), classroom expectations, and discussed learning objectives for the semester. Students are to complete their "Tourist & The Fish" response questions before the start of class next Monday.

Week 2 (September 11-15)

September 11: Today the students had a lecture on The Social Sciences. Students should read pages 10-19, answering questions 1,2,4, and 5 for homework.
September 12: Today the students revisited the basics of Psychology, and watched a short video on the Bobo Doll Experiment.

September 13: Today the students worked on Research & Inquiry skills, via textbook pages 30-31. Students should have completed questions 1,2,3,4 in class. For homework, students should be prepared to defend their thesis (Question 4) for the start of tomorrow’s class.
September 14: Today the students read about, watched, and began to answer questions related to The Milgram Experiment. Students should complete questions 1,2,3,4, and 5 for homework.

September 15: Today the students were given their Stanford Prison Experiment Assignment. Students were given the bulk of class to complete the task. The assignment is due at the start of class Monday.



Week 3 (September 18-22)

September 18: Today students had an introductory lecture on Anthropology. For homework, students are expected to be prepared to present (~3 min) their article summary.

September 19: Today students learned more about sociology.


September 20: Today students had their unit 1 quiz.
September 21: Today students had an in-class debate related to the pros and cons of animal experimentation.
September 22: Today students attended the University Fair.

Week 4 (September 25-29)

September 25: Today students learned about Behaviorism. Students should complete the follow-up questions for homework.

September 26: Today students discussed their answers to yesterday’s questions related to Behaviorism and began working on their “Agents of Social Change” assignment.

September 27: Today students were provided with a review package for next Tuesday’s Unit Test. Students also had the opportunity to work on their “Agents of Social Change” assignment.

September 28: Today Today students had one last work period for their “Agents of Social Change” assignment; this assignment is due Monday.
September 29: Today students participated in the “Terry Fox Run”.

Week 5 (October 2-6)

October 2: Today students submitted their agents of social change assignments via turnitin. Further, students looked at various schools of thought in pairs and created a short in-class presentation. Students ended the class with a review game, and had the opportunity to ask any last minute questions related to unit 1 content.
October 3: Today students wrote their unit 1 test.
October 4: Today students started their second unit and learned more about social change. For homework students should come to class prepared to discuss their cost of living research.
October 5: Today students continued to learn about social change, focusing on individuals who have contributed to the study. For homework, students should answer questions 1-3 on page 41.
October 6: Today students learned about the forces that influence change.

Week 6 (October 10-13)

October 10: Today students went over the CCT (expectations, check-in points, and due date) as well as learning about “Money & Power” (P. 102-107, Q’s 1-4 on P. 106). For homework students should read one of the articles below and write a brief (1-2 paragraph) summary.

October 11: Today students looked at the positive influence of media. For homework, those who have not presented their work should ensure they are prepared for the start of class Thursday.

October 12: Today students had a lecture on theories related to Technology & Social Change. For homework students should finish questions 1-2 on page 137.
October 13: Today students learned about The Factors That Influence Change and had a CCT check-in (Phase 1).


Week 7 (October 16-20)

October 16: Today students were provided with an overview for their in-class debate. The class was split into two teams, and each team had the remainder of the period to prepare their respective sides.

October 17: Today students had a work period for their CCT (Phase 2); students located credible resources and began their brainstorming.
October 18: Today students had an in class debate.
October 19: Today students learned about Social Justice and how the concept can lead to social change. For homework students should read 1 of the 2 articles below and answer the following questions.
1) Based on the information provided, do you believe that the protest is both reasonable and effective?
2) How would the protest play out in Canadian society?
3) How likely would you be to join in the protest? Why is this the case?

October 20: Today students worked towards completing their “Cost of Change Assignment”. This assignment will be due next Tuesday.



Week 8 (October 23-27)

October 23: Today students had a brief lecture on “Leaders of Social Change”, split into pairs and began working on creating presentations related to the topic. Students were also provided with a review package for Thursday’s quiz.

October 24: Today students submitted their “Cost of Change” assignment. Further, students presented their leaders of social change work.
October 25: Today students had a work period for their CCT. Students should aim have the annotated bibliography portion of the project completed by the end of class. Phase 2 of the assignment is due next Thursday.
October 26: Today students wrote their Unit 2 terminology quiz.

October 27: Today students watched a short film and answered questions related to a leader of social change.

Week 9 (October 30-November 3)

October 30: Today students finished the “A Long Walk to Freedom” film. The questions should be completed for Wednesday’s class. Students also reviewed for tomorrow’s unit test.
October 31: Today students wrote their Unit 2 Test. For homework students should read pages 145-149 and make notes on the subtopics OR answer questions 1-4 on page 149.
November 1: Today students had a work period for their CCT. Students are reminded that ‘phase 2’ of the projected is to be submitted at the start of tomorrow’s class.
November 2: Today students began their social trends unit, focusing on demographics.

Week 10 (November 6-10)

November 6: Today students learned about Social Trends. For homework students should complete their reading of pages 248-252, answering questions 1-5 (P.252).
November 7: Today students learned about Social Deviance Theories. For homework students should complete their reading of pages 44-47, answering questions 1-3 (P.47).
November 8: Today students began working on their Deviance & Social Change Assignment. This assignment will be due next Tuesday (November 14th).
November 9: Today students analysed a pair of videos detailing the differences between Generation Y & The Baby Boomers.

November 10: No class, parent-teacher interviews.

Week 11 (November 13-17)

November 13: Today students learned about Generation Y. For homework students should finish reading pages 82-85, answering questions 1-2 (P. 85).
November 14: Today students presented their Infographic Assignment to the class.
November 15: Today students learned about Growing Trends in Society. For homework students should complete the review questions (How can video games effectively replace reality? Compare 3 social networking site, relate each to one concept from class).
November 16: Today students learned about Trends & Internal Drive. For homework students should finish reading pages 112-118, answering questions 1-2 (P. 118).
November 17: Today students had a work period for their CCT. Students focused on completing (roughly) 1/3rd of their rough draft.



Week 12 (November 20-24)

November 20: Today students learned more about Trends & Careers. For homework students should finish reading pages 229-234, answering questions 1-4.
November 21: Today students began their Youth Culture Assignment.

November 22: Today students watched and discussed part 1 of Valentine Road. Students took notes throughout the film in order to answer a series of follow up questions.
November 23: Today students watched part 2 of Valentine Road. For homework students should complete the follow up questions.
November 24: Today students had the opportunity to review for their Unit #3 Test as well as continuing to work on phase 3 of their CCT.



Week 13 (November 27-December 1)

November 27: Today students furthered their understanding of Trends in Music. November 28: Today students submitted their Youth Culture Assignment. In addition, students learned about Genetic Manipulation and its implications. For homework students should read the article “Is Intelligence Hereditary?” and answer the attached questions.

November 29: Today students had a review period for tomorrow’s Unit Test.
November 30: Today students wrote their Unit #3 Test.
December 1: Today students submitted Phase 3 (Rough Draft) of their CCT at the end of the period.

Week 14 (December 4-8)

December 4: Today students learned about the Robbers Cave Experiment, via a short lesson, video, and follow up questions. For homework students should complete the attached questions.

December 5: Today students had a lecture related to Social Stratification. For homework students should read pages 324-330, answering questions 1-3 (P.330).
December 6: Today students explored issues related to Global Warming. For homework students should read the article “How to fix global warming” (link below) and provide a complete summary.

December 7: Today students learned about short term and long term effects of Consumerism. For homework students should read pages 319-323, answering questions 1-4 (P. 323).
December 8: Today students were provided with their Globalization Cartoon Assignment. We went over the expectations in class, and students had the remainder of the period to work on the assignment.


Week 15 (December 11-15)

December 11: Today students learned about the Global Drug Trade. For homework students should read pages 319-323, answering questions 1-4 (P. 323).
December 12: Today students learned about Transnational Organizations. For homework students should read pages 293-297, answering questions 1-3 (P. 297).
December 13: Today students focused on Human Rights Issues. For homework students should read pages 301-306, answering questions 1-6 (P. 306).

December 14: Today students had a review period for Unit 4 Test.

December 15: Today students had a CCT work period (Phase 4 & 5)



Week 16 (December 18-22)

December 18: Today students spent the first half of class reviewing for Thursday’s Unit Test. Further, early volunteers began their CCT presentations.
December 19: Today students presented their CCT’s.
December 20: Today students completed their CCT presentations.
December 21: Today students wrote their Unit 4 Test.
December 22: Today students watched a film related to contemporary issues in High School.

Week 17 (January 8-12)


January 8: Today students reviewed material from Unit 1 (Definitions, Theories, Open ended Questions, Kahoot).
January 9: Today students reviewed material from Unit 2 (Definitions, Theories, Open ended Questions, Pictionary).

January 10: Today students reviewed material from Unit 3 (Definitions, Theories, Open ended Questions, Case Studies).

January 11: Today students reviewed material from Unit 4 (Definitions, Theories, Open ended Questions, Debate).

January 12: Today students had the opportunity to clarify any outstanding course concepts.
